Plus, I'm now living out my fantasies from The Professional.
Watering the owl, done.
Dusting my plant, in progress.
Assuming I remember to water these little guys every few days and that the terrible soil we have in Southern California has any nutrients in it at all, I should have leafy green things to eat in a few months.

Here is a photo for Electric Addict who made a note in the comments about my not including a photo. For the record, I haven't seen leafy green things emerge from this pot yet myself:
Soon, I hope

The nice thing about herbs is that most don't need super rich soil. Compact plants have more intense flavor. In my blog I have a picture of oregano growing in a cold frame. They were originally planted in 4 inch pots. I never transplanted them out of the pots. When I pulled them from the garden, the roots were hanging out the bottom of the containers I put them on a large plastic lid, threw some dirt on the lid so the roots wouldn't freak out in the sun and kept the soil moist. If you have a garden center nearby you can purchase some good potting soil and plant it in a container-any old pot as long as it has good drainage. You'll have to experiment with using fresh basil as opposed to dried herb in recipes. There's quite a difference.
ReplyDeleteI've got some, nice and fresh. It's good stuff and it's been growing on its own.
ReplyDeleteYeah buy a bag of soil from Lowes/Home Depot. So Cal dirt only grows weeds!

ReplyDeleteHERBS, like basil especially, do best when started in doors, in small containers (use an old egg carton 12 pack, put 3 seeds per egg hole) then transfer to the big pot when they are more mature, just use some kind of rooting liquid or something (I like VF11) to avoid shock.
