Entertainment Notes - Netflix

Statement of Purpose

I don't expect Clean Sheets and Dirty Girls to devolve into a movie review site because I don't know what it takes to write a decent movie review and the movie industry is pretty well covered.

This blog will continue to feature my notes and since I recently ditched cable TV in favor of Netflix I was bound to form some opinions on the Netflix content library.

Notes on Netflix Offerings

In this post I'll point out some things I noticed about:
  • Daniel Tosh’s Completely Serious
  • Clerks
  • Murder in the Rue Morgue
  •  .com for Murder
If you're down with the whole Netflix thing, you might want to check out 35 minutes or so into Daniel Tosh’s Completely Serious special.  He has a bit about football, which is worth watching.

Has anyone else noticed that Dante literally comes out of the closet at the beginning of Clerks?

53 minutes into Murder in the Rue Morgue there is a good scene in which the retired detective meets the current detective along with the retired detective’s sidekick.

With the title .com for Murder and actress Nicollette Sheridan in a starring role, how could this move fail to interest an Interent junkie and all around technophile like me?  The answer is that .com for Murder could depict people doing things that no human being could be expected to actually do in real life if presented with the fictional situations presented in this sub-par movie.  This guy basically sums up my feelings towards this movie:
Thank You Idiocracy for Saying Things
I Would Feel Uncomfortable Saying Myself

I find it a bit disappointing to realize just how many movies are neither included in the Netflix library nor shown regularly, if ever, on cable TV.  For example, Runaway, a 1984 movie starring Tom Selleck, was never going to win best picture at the Oscars but it was a decent entry in the police action category with some science fiction elements.  To my way of thinking, the robotic spiders featured in  Runaway  are far more imaginative than the standard movie villian's henchman.  Again, I don't mean to imply that Runaway was a great movie.  It's not.  The Tomatometer currently lists it at 47%, as you can see for yourself here.  It is however a decent movie with some above average elements.  My argument is that it would be a shame if movies like Runaway become forgotten in the future while movies like .com for Murder continue to enter the consciousness of movie watchers.

  2. I'm with you when it comes to Netflix buddy, it needs a little fine tuning to say the very.

  3. That's a good post Roger. Better than movie reviews. Netflix sometimes is a savior for me. When I am too much fed up with local news and repeat telecast of friends. But havent seen any of the above you had listed, let me give it a watch.

    1. Their choices probably seem good to you BECAUSE you haven’t used it. I had Netflix for a while and got bored rather quickly. They boast impressive numbers when they say they have X number of movies and shows but if you only actually want to see, say five of those…the selection doesn’t seem so great. As far as streaming services go, I like Blockbuster @Home much better. Probably because it’s not just streaming; it also includes a bunch of movie channels, and disc rentals by mail of both movies and video games. I originally just gave it a try because my employer, DISH, had released it and I like being up-to-speed on all our products, but I ended up keeping it because it’s really rounded out my entertainment options.

    2. I actually had a Netflix subscription several years ago.

I suppose a lot of my interest owes to the fact that it's new to me still.

Blockbuster is now on my radar- thanks!

  5. HUH. THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR.

No, seriously, I have a whole blog about this kinda thing, m'man. >XD My ability to access netflix is currently hampered though, so perhaps I should consider if I should continue it or not. Especially if better bloggers are going to snap up on the niche. <3

    1. Like I said, I don't plan to post regularly about Netflix. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, yours included. I just found a few things on Netflix to be noteworthy and mentioned them here.

    2. Awww, 's coo bro! My toes are protected with steel-toed boots - in the very least you can stand on them while we dance~! I lead though.

Naw for what it's worth it's all good, especially since you DID say that you're not doing it as a regular thing. :D And besides, how many other Netflix-based blogs ARE there?

The only reason why I haven't applied to them for funding or anything like that is because I DO have a couple of "WTF Netflix?!" blogposts (seriously, glitches do pop up from time to time, like wanting to watch Golgo 13 and instead getting Honey and Clover. A animu series about psychotically impossible assassinations performed by a stone-cold killer and a animu about a horribly cute slice-of-life shenanigans of a nice college student who looks 13 but is actually 18. Yeah, I can see how those can be confused for one another), plus I hate the idea of having to conform to whatever format they want.

Screw it, I do best when I'm unbought and when the bias is only my own. Makes me feel a bit more honest in the opinions I give, y'knowwhatImean?

  6. I think if you can't find it on Netflix, people assume it doesn't exist, but you may be able to find it in some other source. I think they also continue to expand their library.

    1. Apparently Lovefilm doesn't do much advertising on this side of the pond because this is the first I've heard of this service. If/ when the Netflix Watch Instantly library gets stale, I will give Lovefilm a better look. There are quite a few fictional shows from the BBC that are on my list because of a UK based magazine on Photoshop I read. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention!

  12. Netflix has some great unheard of movies. I watched this one called Pow Wow Highway...it was legitimate!

  13. Good thing I don't plan to get it then

  14. I first discovered that movie on television at a very young age, probably around '86, and I remember it scared the shit out of me, esp the robotic spiders that SHOOT VENOM INTO YOUR NECK. But really what movie that has Gene Simmons as the villain isn't going to be frightening? It's a movie I would definitely watch again. But my take is screw Netflix anyway, I'll just torrent for free.

  15. I'm still never going to use Netflix.

  16. netflix? haven't really heard of it.

  17. Ha, I've seen Runaway! That's one of those movies that you don't think anyone else in the world has ever seen until someone mentions it on the internet 25 years later. I had completely forgotten it.
